Submental fullness, often referred to as the “double chin”, is a common complaint among patients, yet outside of liposuction, a more invasive procedure, our options on how to treat this excess fat had been quite limited. Submental fullness can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be caused by many factors including aging, genetics, weight gain, and lifestyle. This type of volume is often resistant to change with diet and exercise alone. In fact, in a recent study, 68% of people said they’re bothered by under-the-chin fullness, or double chin.
How does KYBELLA™ work?
KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used to help improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin often referred to as the “double chin.” The active ingredient in KYBELLA™ is deoxycholic acid. This is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat under the chin, it causes the destruction of fat cells to the treated areas. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
KYBELLA™ is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of the “double chin”. When you come in for your consultation, we will design a customized treatment plan to help improve your chin profile for your desired results. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions spaced a month or more apart. However, up to 6 treatments may be administered for full correction and desired results. When injected properly, all other cells remain healthy and intact. Only the fat cells treated with KYBELLA™ are destroyed.
In clinical trials, 68.2% of patients responded to KYBELLA™ and 79% of patients treated reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin. Some swelling may occur as a result of treatment. Most patients reported swelling resolving within 3-7 days of treatment.
