Traditionally, cosmetic treatments and procedures have been thought to be mostly for women. Facials, peels, hair removal, photo facials, botox, fillers, and cosmetic surgery have been an industry dominated to meet the preventative and corrective needs of women. However, as more education about the benefits of these procedures for men has become available, the taboo nature of male cosmetic treatments has started to change. In fact, in 2013 alone, men received more than 1 million of the 11 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the Unites States. The times are definitely changing. Over the next few weeks, I’d like to discuss a couple of the more common procedures/services for men, and how these treatments can be tailored to slow the signs of aging to the male physique and facial structure.

Skin Care

To begin any conversation about cosmetic treatments it is critical to discuss the importance of self maintenance. Before addressing any more aggressive procedures, I’d like to speak of one of the most important aspects of anti-aging for both men and women. Good skin care is by far one of the easiest and most vital options for slowing the skin’s aging process. Having medical grade products to help treat your particular skin complaints can be one of the greatest tools to prolonging the results of any other cosmetic procedures your receive as well as providing noticeable changes in the skin all on their own. Yet making the investment and being consistent with a skincare regimen are often ones men in particular intensely resist. I try to work with my male patients on understanding that the benefits of good skin care far outweigh the 5 annoying minutes you spend washing your face and putting on your products. And these are things I myself have committed to doing every day. I firmly believe that real men moisturize!

I highly recommend to my male patients to keep it simple: start with something you can commit to like getting rid of your bar soap and adding in a real skin cleanser and toner. That step alone can make noticeable changes in the skin by truly cleaning the skin and helping remove the films left behind by bar soap. If this is all you can commit to, try investing in something that will help assist your facial cleanser for a deeper clean like the Clarisonic. This technology is from the makers of the sonicare toothbrush and deep cleans like no other, removing films and environmental pollutants that we collect on our skin and in our pores every day. Plus, it will not add any extra time to your facial cleansing routine. You can even use it in the shower men!

Then once you’re comfortable with your cleansing routine, add in growth factors, vitamin C, and sunscreen in the morning, and a good moisturizer at night. You want to build into the skin nutrients that protect it from aging. Growth factors are collagen stimulators that slow the loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin which when lost creates the fine lines and wrinkles we see with age. Vitamin C puts antioxidants back into the skin to protect the skin deep within the dermis from sun and environmental damage by neutralizing free radicals and supporting collagen regeneration. Sunscreen is one of the most critical pieces to good skin care. It is your first line of defense from sun damage, the most harmful factor in skin aging. It is essential to get a good quality facial sunscreen. Banana Boat isn’t going to cut it for your face men. Remember medical grade products are best because they follow specific guidelines and have research backing their claims. Lastly, don’t forget to moisturize! Men neglect putting moisture back into the skin and this is very important. Our bodies are mostly water and our skin needs that hydration to maintain a youthful radiance. Think about the difference between a grape and a raisin. Hydration is the only thing that makes them different from each other. If you’re wondering where to find these products, consult your cosmetic providers for their recommendations, or come into our office for a complimentary skin care consultation. I personally use NeoCutis Journee in the morning (contains growth factors, vit C, and sunscreen all in one!), and SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter (moisturizer that helps prevent glycation) at night. That’s it! Simple and easy, plus the results in my male patients are phenomenal!
