What is BBL?

BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton’s photofacial treatment that uses precisely filtered pulses of light to clear sun damage, brown spots, redness, rosacea, and uneven tone while stimulating new collagen. It’s a non-invasive way to even out and brighten the skin with little to no downtime. Brown spots lift and flake away, broken capillaries and redness fade, and the skin looks clearer and more luminous over a short series of treatments. BBL can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, and most areas of the body.

The signature version, Forever Young BBL, is a maintenance protocol performed consistently over time. It is the only treatment supported by a published study (the Stanford research on BBL) showing that regular treatment can keep skin looking and behaving measurably younger — essentially helping to slow the visible aging of treated skin. At Hall Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation MedSpa, BBL and Forever Young BBL are performed by MedSpa Director Tricia Hall, CLT, who holds BBL Advanced Training, at our Westlake and Cedar Park locations.

How it works

How BBL clears and renews the skin.

BBL is a true photofacial — light energy is absorbed by the specific targets in your skin (pigment and blood vessels) and converted to heat, which clears damage and signals the skin to rebuild.

BroadBand Light — targeted, tunable, customizable

One platform, many filters, your specific concerns.

BBL delivers broad-spectrum light through interchangeable filters that let the provider tune the wavelength to your concern — one setting targets brown pigment (sun spots, freckles, age spots), another targets the red of broken capillaries, rosacea, and flushing. The light is absorbed by these targets and converts to gentle heat, breaking up pigment and collapsing unwanted vessels while sparing the surrounding skin.

That same controlled heat triggers a regenerative response in the deeper skin — stimulating fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen, which is why BBL improves not just tone but overall texture and firmness over a series. Because the treatment is tuned per patient, the right settings and technique matter enormously, which is where provider training shows up in the result.

Treats
Sun damage, brown/age spots, freckles, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, uneven tone, dullness, and early signs of aging on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
Downtime
Little to none. Expect mild warmth and redness like a light sunburn for a few hours; brown spots darken and flake off over 5–7 days. Most return to normal activities the same day.
Results timeline
Brighter, clearer skin within about a week; best results over a series of 3–5 treatments, with continued collagen benefit over the following months.
The signature protocol

Forever Young BBL — the science of slowing how skin ages.

Most skin treatments correct what’s already there. Forever Young BBL is different: used consistently over time, it’s been shown to change how skin ages at the cellular level.

Backed by published research

A landmark Stanford study found that regular BBL treatments can restore the gene expression of aged skin toward that of younger skin — the basis for the Forever Young BBL protocol. It remains the standout evidence-based reason patients commit to ongoing treatment.

Maintenance, not just correction

Where a single BBL clears existing sun damage, Forever Young BBL is a rhythm — typically two to three sessions a year — that keeps tone even, redness down, and skin behaving younger than its calendar age.

Compounding results over years

Patients who stay consistent often look better in five years than they did at the start — the opposite of the usual trajectory. The earlier you begin, the more aging you stay ahead of.

Pairs with other Sciton tools

Forever Young BBL combines beautifully with Moxi for texture or Halo for deeper resurfacing — a layered approach Tricia can tailor to your skin.

Candidacy

Is BBL right for you?

BBL is one of the most versatile treatments in the MedSpa, but it’s best matched to specific concerns. Here’s how to know where it fits — and when another tool would serve you better.

If your concern is… BBL is… Better-suited alternative
Sun spots, age spots, freckles, brown discoloration An excellent fit —
Redness, rosacea, flushing, broken capillaries A strong option —
Slowing the overall aging of your skin over time Forever Young BBL —
Rough texture, fine lines, mild scarring Helps, but not the primary tool Moxi or Halo resurfacing
Deep wrinkles, significant sun-damage texture Under-powered alone Halo hybrid fractional laser
Skin laxity / sagging Not a tightening tool Ultherapy or Morpheus 8

BBL works on a wide range of skin tones, but light-based treatments require careful settings and screening on deeper or recently tanned skin — which is exactly why an experienced, trained provider matters. BBL is generally avoided over active infections, on recently tanned skin, and during pregnancy. At your consultation, Tricia assesses your skin type and history to confirm BBL is safe and right for you, or recommends a better-matched treatment.

What to expect

From consultation to clearer skin — the BBL timeline.

Consultation
Day 0

Tricia evaluates your skin type, concerns, and history, confirms BBL is appropriate, and recommends single-treatment correction versus a Forever Young BBL series. You leave with a plan and pricing in writing.

Treatment day
30–60 minutes

After cleansing, a cool gel is applied and protective eyewear is worn. Each pulse of light feels like a quick, warm snap — most patients tolerate it easily. Treatment time depends on the areas covered; a full face is typically quick.

First few days
Days 0–7

Mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling fade within hours. Brown spots darken into a “coffee-grounds” look, then flake off naturally over about 5–7 days — do not pick. Diligent sunscreen is essential during this window.

Clearer skin emerges
Weeks 1–4

As spots flake and redness settles, skin looks brighter, clearer, and more even. Collagen stimulation continues working beneath the surface, refining texture in the weeks that follow.

Series & maintenance
Ongoing

Most concerns respond best to a series of 3–5 treatments spaced a few weeks apart. To sustain results and stay ahead of new sun damage, many patients transition to Forever Young BBL maintenance two to three times a year.

Investment

What BBL costs in Austin.

BBL pricing depends on the area treated (full face, face and neck, chest, hands, or body) and whether you’re doing a single corrective treatment or a Forever Young BBL series. Series and membership pricing typically offer better per-treatment value for patients committing to ongoing maintenance. Your exact plan and pricing are provided in writing at your consultation.

Hall Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation MedSpa offers patient financing through several partners, with 0% APR options for qualified borrowers. Ask about current MedSpa specials and event pricing — BBL is frequently featured.

How it compares

BBL vs. other Sciton skin treatments.

“Should I do BBL, Moxi, or Halo?” comes up at nearly every skin consultation. All three are Sciton platforms — here’s the honest difference, and why they’re often layered together.

BBL / Forever Young BBL

Light therapy for tone — sun spots, redness, rosacea — plus collagen building and aging maintenance. Little downtime. The foundation of most skin programs.

Moxi

A gentle, non-ablative fractional laser for texture and early sun damage with minimal downtime. Pairs perfectly with BBL in the same visit. Learn more →

Halo

A hybrid fractional laser for deeper resurfacing — significant texture, wrinkles, and sun damage — with more downtime and more dramatic renewal. Learn more →

Morpheus 8

Microneedling plus radiofrequency when you also need tightening and remodeling at depth, not just surface tone. Learn more →

Common questions

Common questions about BBL.

BBL is Sciton’s BroadBand Light photofacial — a non-invasive treatment that uses filtered pulses of light to clear sun damage, brown and age spots, redness, rosacea, and uneven tone while stimulating new collagen. It brightens and evens the skin on the face, neck, chest, hands, and body with little to no downtime.

Regular BBL corrects existing concerns like sun spots and redness. Forever Young BBL is the same technology used as an ongoing maintenance protocol — typically a few times a year. It is the only treatment supported by a published Stanford study showing that consistent BBL can keep skin looking and behaving measurably younger over time, essentially slowing the visible aging of treated skin.

BBL effectively treats sun damage, brown and age spots, freckles, facial redness, rosacea, flushing, broken capillaries, and overall uneven or dull tone. By stimulating collagen, it also gradually improves skin texture and firmness. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

BBL delivers broad-spectrum light through interchangeable filters tuned to your concern — one setting targets brown pigment, another targets the red of vessels and rosacea. The light is absorbed by these targets and converts to gentle heat that breaks up pigment and collapses unwanted vessels, while also triggering new collagen production in the deeper skin.

Downtime is minimal. You may have mild redness and a warm, light-sunburn sensation for a few hours. Treated brown spots typically darken and then flake off naturally over about five to seven days. Most patients return to normal activities the same day; diligent sunscreen is important afterward.

Most patients describe each pulse as a quick, warm snap, similar to a light rubber-band flick, which is well tolerated. A cooling gel and the device’s built-in cooling help keep the treatment comfortable. No anesthesia is needed for most areas.

Many concerns respond best to a series of three to five treatments spaced a few weeks apart, though some patients see meaningful improvement after a single session. For ongoing maintenance and anti-aging benefit, Forever Young BBL is typically done two to three times per year. Your plan is set at consultation.

Skin often looks brighter and clearer within about a week as treated spots flake away and redness settles. Collagen-related improvements in texture and firmness continue developing over the following weeks and months, and build further across a series of treatments.

BBL can be used across a range of skin tones, but light-based treatments require careful settings and screening on deeper or recently tanned skin to be safe and effective. This is exactly why an experienced, trained provider matters. At your consultation, Tricia assesses your skin type and history to confirm BBL is appropriate or recommends a better-matched option.

All three are Sciton platforms. BBL is light therapy focused on tone — sun spots, redness, rosacea — plus collagen and anti-aging maintenance. Moxi is a gentle fractional laser for texture and early sun damage with minimal downtime. Halo is a hybrid fractional laser for deeper resurfacing with more downtime. They are often layered together for a complete result.

Yes. BBL is frequently combined with Moxi (for texture) or Halo (for deeper resurfacing) in the same visit, and pairs well with HydraFacial, microneedling, and injectables as part of a broader plan. Tricia will recommend the right sequence and spacing for your skin and goals.

BBL and Forever Young BBL are performed by MedSpa Director Tricia Hall, CLT, who holds BBL Advanced Training and has led Central Texas skin care since 1989, under the medical oversight of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Hall.
